Background

An internal training program designed for repetitive use. Resources are made available to staff, who then test their knowledge with the quiz system. Prizes are awarded every month for the person who gets the highest points for each round. Staff have the choice of attempting the quiz three times each round.

iVelocity staff use a management system to update the questions for each round and publish questions and answers to the live area.

Challenges and Opportunities

This project was particularly difficult as I had until this project not dealt with Macromedia Flash to any great degree. Initially developed in flash 3 this is probably one of the first fully functional flash applications.

Solution

Macromedia Flash is the front end to a sophisticated quiz system with timers, timeouts, randomisers and database connectivity. While the management system completely written in VBScript ASP provides a secure facility to update question, staff and round information.

Benefits

Training in large organisations can never be understated. Although training was not the purpose of this application it provided the tools required to provide the motivation to study and test an entire organisations understanding of new technologies.

This application was used in 6 month cycles for at least 2.5 years until I left the company I was working for. As far as I know it may still be a valuable tool employed by Telstra to this day.
