Portfolio & gt; Content Management System

Background

The Janus Content Management System has a lengthy history built on the requirements of many clients. This feature packed web based application has developed based on client requests and a great deal of research into usability, accessibility, user experience design, information architecture and work flow processes.

The cumulating of research is what sets this web based application apart from all other content management systems on the market today.

Challenges and Opportunities

Initial development was born out of necessity as most things are. At the time Vignette and Broadvision were mainstream content management systems and they were expensive and certainly out of reach for most businesses.

The challenge was to develop a content management system that could be provided in an inexpensive way, yet had enough features to empower my clients. Several months I took to think about how to approach such a challenge, and many ground breaking ideas came to mind.

From data structures to user interface this content management system was easy to extend and improve as time progressed.

Options

Options for development came down to three main options:

  1. VBScript ASP - a commonly implemented language available on any server with Windows NT4+ installed;
  2. JScript ASP - probably the fastest server side language available, again available on Windows NT4+ servers;
  3. Client side executable, that would restrict access to only those PC's with the software installed.

The main problem with JScript was Microsoft's emphasis on .NET, it seemed to me that JScript may not be supported in the future. The problem with a client side application is the problem with distribution and update of code.

The Solution

The VBScript web based application was decided upon. Data structures is what really sets this system apart, making it a breeze to update templates, edit page content, modify information architecture, track changes, apply workflow processes and apply client specify changes.

Benefits

Obviously clients improve the user experience by keeping their website up to date. But they also have the ability to change site structure and react to end user requirements quickly.

The system help businesses write content specific to their target markets and supplies guides to avoid common web page mistakes. Furthermore, the system can check to consistent wording and for spelling mistakes.

Clients who have implemented this web based applications have better websites as a result.
