The
ever growing amount of information creates an environment
where information becomes and strategic disadvantage because
there is too much. This modern issue coined "infosmog"
can be resolved with education and a systematic approach.
Through independent research and work experience, I have
developed a comprehensive skill set aimed at clearing the
"infosmog" and once again use information as a strategic
advantage.
Before Document Management Systems (DMS)
There are countless document management systems available
today. Consultants and businesses will sell these systems as
the magic bullet to managing documents. During the process of
implementation it will become apparent that the business will
need to change document storage processes and responsibilities.
Many advantages can be achieved through fundamental information
management principles and education. Such changes can be achieved
without expensive document management systems, however provide
a strong foundation on which DMS can be implemented.
Core documents of an organisation such as policies and procedures
need to be made available to all staff. It should be easy
to know where such documents can be found, and know which
terms can be used to find the relevant document.
Management Information Systems
In order to take advantage of fleeting opportunities management
teams at different levels within an organisation require different
reports. For example middle management need to know about
the operational performance of resources. While upper management
need to perform adhoc reports based on internal and external
data for long term analysis.
Relevant Experience
There is a growing requirement to manage the large amount of
information that organisations create. While elements of information
management are covered within the course materials of my masters
degree in e-business, information management is a growing science.
- Corporate taxonomy and dictionary for a national and a
regional organisation;
- Create a single source of formal news, policies and procedures
for two national organisations;
- A decision support system for a national business;
- An adhoc report building system for a national business;
- Metadata standards for websites, documents and images;
- Communications for the purpose of education of all knowledge
workers in relation to new information management processes
and responsibilities;
- Implementation of many content management systems for
websites and intranets;
- Developed and implemented many instances of a low cost
content management system with features such as spell check,
word watch (a system that checks for terms that are not
preferred), help to assist in writing online articles and
many more;
- Developed many interactive and real time reporting systems;
and
- Developed an online toolkit for the management of projects
within organisations (inclusive of document templates) based
on the PMBOK framework.
